AI Agents and Crypto Are Having a Moment—Whether It Sticks Is Another Question

2026-07-27

Brian Armstrong wants you to know that artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency aren't enemies. They're partners. Specifically, he's arguing that autonomous AI agents need programmable money to function at scale, and crypto—with its lack of settlement delays and bank account requirements—fits that job perfectly.

The timing matters. x402 agentic transactions on Base just hit over 100 million cumulative transactions through Q1 2026. That's the sort of number that gets venture capitalists and tech executives to sit up straighter.

So what's x402, and why should anyone care? Think of it as a protocol for machine-to-machine payments. It launched in May 2025, uses USDC as its settlement layer, and lets AI agents make micropayments directly on-chain without intermediaries. No bank account. No waiting. Just cryptography and stablecoins doing what they're supposed to do.

Base—Coinbase's Ethereum layer-two network—became the primary venue for these transactions. The growth was absurd. From near-zero in Q3 2025 to 100 million transactions in roughly three quarters. But here's the thing: a lot of that was nonsense.

In Q4 2025, a meme coin called PING turned x402 into a speculative casino. The mechanics were almost funny. Users queried a URL, got an HTTP 402 response, paid 1 USDC to mint tokens. It's clever, technically speaking. It's also the kind of thing that makes you question whether anyone's using this for actual utility. Transaction volumes rocketed over 10,000% in a single week. PING alone processed 150,000 transactions in its first month.

Except then something shifted. As the meme-coin fever broke, the character of transactions changed. Transactions of $1 or more now account for 95% of total volume transferred, up from 49% in early 2025. That suggests the noise is settling and actual use cases are emerging. Agentic payment operators—predominantly younger wallets—hold 550% more asset types than typical Base users and carry smaller balances. They behave differently because they are different.

Coinbase hasn't been shy about building products on top of this infrastructure. Coinbase for Agents lets users connect AI agents directly to their accounts so the agents can trade, make payments, and execute financial workflows. Coinbase Business launched a merchants' payments stack on 23 July 2026 that lets shops accept crypto payments from—you guessed it—AI agents. The agents fund wallets and settle in USDC on Base.

Amazon and Google are already using x402. That's the institutional validation everyone points to, and it does matter. It's one thing when hobbyists experiment with a new protocol. It's another when tech giants adopt it.

Armstrong's broader argument cuts against the usual crypto-versus-AI narrative. He's saying they don't compete. Agents need money that moves at machine speed. Crypto does that. Each technology creates demand for the other.

That's a compelling story. Whether the actual transaction volume can sustain itself beyond speculation and early-stage experimentation is the real question nobody can answer yet.
