Binance Launches Regulated Gold and Silver Options—TradFi Creeping Into Crypto
2026-07-29Binance has just launched gold and silver options through Nest Exchange Limited, its Abu Dhabi Global Market–regulated subsidiary. So now you can trade precious metals derivatives without leaving the platform. The options settle in USDT, price off multiple third-party feeds, and retail traders can buy calls and puts but can't write them.
Why should you care? Because this is TradFi moving into crypto territory, not the other way round. Binance has been running gold and silver perpetual futures since January—demand apparently strong enough that they've now added options. The distinction between what retail traders can do and what institutions can do is revealing: retail gets downside capped at the premium paid, while eligible institutional clients and approved liquidity providers can write options, collect premiums, run proper portfolio hedges. It's risk management baked into the structure.
Gold hit record highs recently. Investors are looking for inflation hedges outside traditional equities. Enter crypto-native exposure to actual commodities—no need to leave Binance's ecosystem to get it. That's the pitch. And Binance plans to expand further, potentially allowing retail traders limited option-writing under stricter rules down the line.
The timing aligns neatly with regulatory clarity. In July, Tether Gold (XAU₮) was recognised as an Accepted Spot Commodity within ADGM. That cleared the way for ADGM-regulated firms to offer XAU₮ subject to their own approvals. Tether Gold is straightforward: one token equals one fine troy ounce of physical gold, stored in secure vaults mostly in Switzerland. Direct ownership of bullion, essentially.
Here's the structural difference worth noting. Binance's options are derivatives—you're trading price exposure without owning the actual metal. Tokenized commodities like Tether Gold give you ownership claims on physical bullion sitting in vaults. Different beasts, same market trend. Together they've expanded the commodity-linked crypto space considerably.
The tokenized real-world asset market now exceeds $31 billion. A year ago it was $6.6 billion. That's the kind of growth that gets regulators' attention and probably explains why Binance bothered with the ADGM structure in the first place.
Speaking of regulation: Binance's ADGM approval is comprehensive. Three separate regulated entities operate within ADGM under the Binance.com umbrella. Nest Services Limited (now Nest Exchange Limited) holds approval as a Recognised Investment Exchange with a Multilateral Trading Facility licence—the thing that lets them actually run on-exchange trading for spot and derivatives. It's the foundation everything else sits on.
What's actually happening here is institutional money wanting crypto infrastructure and crypto platforms wanting institutional money. Commodities options are table stakes for any serious exchange. Binance adding them through a regulated channel signals they're playing the long game—building out what a proper financial institution needs, just with blockchain underneath.
