Bitcoin ETF Money Started Walking Out the Door When Iran Tensions Spiked
2026-07-25Bitcoin spot ETFs in the U.S. dumped $225.2 million on July 23. That broke a seven-day win streak. The previous week had been sweet: $981.2 million in net inflows, straight days of money flowing in. Then geopolitical fear showed up and killed the party.
BlackRock's IBIT took the heaviest hit. $202.5 million redeemed. When the largest fund in the category starts bleeding, people notice. Other ETF providers also saw redemptions, though none approached that scale. The concentrated exodus told you something important: institutional sentiment tracks real-world events pretty directly.
Here's what gets interesting though. Ethereum ETFs kept their streak alive. Five days running of inflows. $26.3 million on the same day Bitcoin was getting punished. That's not panic selling. That's rotation. Money moving within crypto, not out of it entirely.
The catalyst was Iran. U.S.-Iran tensions ratcheted up, oil prices jumped around (Brent crude hit $91.42 before sliding to $88.04), and Bitcoin dipped below $65,000—bottoming at $64,600. The traditional "risk-off" playbook kicked in. Equities struggled. Safe havens got crowded. Bitcoin, despite everything, still trades like a risk asset when things genuinely frighten the market.
Context matters here. This inflow streak only just happened after a brutal eight-week period that drained $8.2 billion from the same funds. So we're watching a recovery that hasn't even solidified yet, now getting tested. The weekly math still favored the bulls—through Thursday, funds were up roughly $274 million across five sessions—but July 23 proved that momentum can vanish fast.
Some analysts call this natural. Bloomberg Intelligence's Eric Balchunas has compared Bitcoin ETF flows to gold's 22-year record and predicted a "two steps forward, one step back" pattern. Fair enough. Single days don't make trends. But they do signal where the pressure points are.
The technical wrinkle worth noting: that dip below $65,000 triggered conversation about "death cross" patterns and bear market territory. Traders watch these levels. When they break, psychology shifts. Sometimes people act on it.
Ethereum's relative strength during the bloodletting was the real tell. Institutional managers weren't fleeing crypto. They were repositioning within it. That distinction matters a lot more than the absolute outflow number.
What happens next probably doesn't depend much on Bitcoin itself. The Federal Reserve meets July 28-29. That's usually when broader market direction gets signalled. Geopolitical moves matter too—if U.S.-Iran stuff cools, Bitcoin likely stabilises. If it escalates, expect more volatility and possibly more redemptions.
For now, Bitcoin ETF investors are stuck in the middle. The recovery momentum was real. The uncertainty is real too.
