Bitcoin Treads Water at $64K as Traders Sweat a Fed Surprise
2026-07-29Bitcoin's holding steady around $64,486 as the Federal Reserve prepares to speak on Wednesday. The broader crypto market's edging up gently — modest gains, nothing dramatic — but everyone's really waiting for what Chair Kevin Warsh decides to do with interest rates.
The consensus is straightforward: hold. Markets expect the fed funds rate to stay put at 3.5% to 3.75%. Boring, right? Except the probability of a surprise hike has spiked dramatically. As of July 24, CME FedWatch was pricing a hold at 62-68% and a hike at 32-38%. That's the highest hike probability since the Fed stopped tightening. Some minority is genuinely spooked.
Citadel Securities is making an unconventional call. They reckon Warsh will hike a quarter-point. Against consensus, sure. But their logic has teeth: a hike would reinforce Warsh's repeated pledges on price stability, and it'd signal that the Fed no longer telegraphs every move in advance. Frank Flight, their head of macro strategy, argues it'd also establish Warsh's inflation-fighting credibility straight away. UBS shares this view. PGIM too.
The inflation backdrop matters here. Since Warsh took over after the June FOMC meeting, market expectations have swung wildly. Rate cuts looked likely. Now traders are bracing for multiple hikes through 2026. The hawkish shift has been dramatic.
Flight put it bluntly: "The market may once again be underestimating the extent of the hawkish shift at the Fed."
For crypto, this decision carries real weight. Bitcoin's trading at $64,486, up 0.99% in 24 hours. Ether's near $1,950. If the Fed simply holds, there's no crowded trade to unwind — the base case is probably already priced in. But this week's seen record demand for hedges against a surprise hike. Traders are genuinely anxious.
The wild card is Warsh himself. He's vowed to share less "forward guidance." Experts say don't expect much clarity on his actual economic views. The announcement will come, but he won't be telegraphing the next three moves. That uncertainty alone is unsettling markets.
Bitcoin and Ether are holding. Traders are watching. Warsh's still a question mark.
