Bullish's Escape Plan: Trading Revenue Tanked, But They're Building Something Else
2026-08-13Bullish posted a $280 million net loss in Q2 2026. That's the headline. Now forget it and look at what actually matters.
Digital asset sales cratered—$32.6 billion down from $58.6 billion year-on-year. Trading's in the bin. But adjusted revenue jumped to $92.6 million from $57.0 million. Adjusted EBITDA nearly quadrupled to $29.5 million. The gap between those two stories is where the real story lives.
The company (which owns CoinDesk, full disclosure) is executing a deliberate pivot. Subscription, services, and other revenue hit a record $62.7 million in Q2 alone. That's now 68% of adjusted revenue. Not a rounding error anymore—it's the business.
What does that revenue actually represent? Media operations, data products, liquidity services, indices. Things that don't depend on whether traders are bidding or asking. Things that generate cash whether Bitcoin's at $30k or $100k.
Morgan Stanley's adoption of CoinDesk indices is the tangible proof point. They've launched BTC, ETH, and SOL products tracking these benchmarks. Q2 inflows: over $400 million. That's institutional capital flowing into crypto exposure through traditional finance channels. Two years ago that would've sounded absurd. Now it's recurring revenue.
Then there's the Equiniti acquisition. $2.4 billion deal, closing early 2027 if regulators cooperate. Bullish's getting transfer agency capabilities grafted onto its trading infrastructure. End-to-end issuer services. No one else at scale offers that combination. It's not sexy, but it's defensive and sticky.
The balance sheet helps here. $500 million-plus in cash. Long-term debt that's manageable. When you're burning cash on IFRS accounting (non-cash charges, fair-value markdowns, the usual suspects), a fortress balance sheet means you can survive the transition without kneecapping yourself.
Management's 2026 guidance: subscription and services revenue of $225 million to $245 million. Operating expenses of $225 million to $230 million. Do the maths. They're targeting operational breakeven on adjusted metrics. Not profit. Not loss. Flat, running a business that generates enough recurring income to sustain itself.
That's the play. Stop being a trading business. Become an infrastructure and data business that happens to have a trading desk.
The Q2 loss stings on paper. But traders aren't pricing this as a failure—they're pricing the cash position, the pipeline, the Morgan Stanley partnership, the regulatory approvals for tokenized securities trading, the record Consensus events pulling institutional attendees. They're pricing the fact that crypto market cycles are brutal, but data and infrastructure are forever.
Softer trading conditions haven't broken Bullish. They've accelerated the transformation. By the time volumes recover, the subscription revenue base might be strong enough that it doesn't matter.
