Founders Fund Bets $5M on Anvil's Vision of Business-Grade Crypto Collateral
2026-10-07Peter Thiel's venture outfit is placing a serious wager on decentralized collateral infrastructure. Founders Fund has just led a $5 million token purchase in Anvil, an Ethereum protocol that locks digital assets to guarantee financial commitments. The timing matters—this is a deliberate move to exploit a gap nobody else has fully colonised: the chasm between crypto mechanics and how businesses actually need to operate.
The deal pulled in an interesting crew. Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish, and Protoscale Capital came along, plus angels including Robert Leshner from Superstate, Rene Reinsberg from Celo, and Mike Cahill from Douro Labs. The tokens came from Anvil's existing treasury, so no dilution for current holders. As governance assets, the new participants get voting rights on protocol decisions as things scale.
What makes this different from typical venture rounds: Founders Fund isn't grabbing equity in a company. It's acquiring governance tokens tied directly to the protocol's long-term viability and adoption. That alignment signals something—investors genuinely believe crypto collateral moves beyond DeFi traders and into actual business operations and payments. That's a different bet entirely.
Anvil's core trick is subtle. Standard DeFi lets you deposit collateral and borrow against it, paying interest and risking liquidation. Anvil uses digital-asset collateral to guarantee financial commitments without creating a loan at all. Think of it as a blockchain-native letter of credit: assets sit reserved to guarantee payment to another party and get claimed if the commitment fails. No interest, no custody transfer. Less friction. Less counterparty risk.
To get that technology into companies that don't speak blockchain fluently, Anvil Research Labs has released a software development kit. The SDK lets firms integrate Anvil's collateral management without writing a line of blockchain code. This is the step that matters for real adoption. Early users and testers include Consensus, Bitcoin.com, Flexa, and Bullish—which plans to embed Anvil across its own operations and reckons it could be the first public company to deploy the protocol at organisational scale.
Scale-wise, Anvil is still small. About $14 million in total value locked, nowhere close to DeFi lending giants like Aave or Morpho, which hold around $56 billion combined. But Anvil isn't in that fight. It's staking territory in business-to-business collateralization—buy-now-pay-later, trade finance, security deposits, anywhere businesses need verifiable guarantees without traditional banking infrastructure.
The ANVL token has 80 billion in circulation out of 100 billion total, with roughly 60 percent allocated to partners and community. Recent governance votes have already expanded accepted collateral to include EURC, cbBTC, sUSDe, WBTC, and wstETH, so the protocol's actually evolving based on token-holder decisions. That matters.
Joey Krug at Founders Fund distilled the thesis into one sentence: businesses need certainty. "Businesses need to know the commitments behind payments and credit will be honored," he said. "Anvil lets them secure those commitments with verifiable digital asset collateral, and the new SDK makes it easier to integrate into their products."
Anvil came from Tyler Spalding, who co-founded Flexa, and was bootstrapped as open-source by the Acronym Foundation. No fees at the protocol level. Governance runs through token voting. Free, transparent, community-owned—it positions itself as infrastructure, not a rent-extraction engine. Maybe that's why serious institutional money will buy governance tokens instead of demanding equity.
