Morgan Stanley Just Launched Ethereum and Solana ETPs with Staking Rewards. Yes, Really.
2026-07-29Morgan Stanley Investment Management has quietly launched two new exchange-traded products: the Morgan Stanley Ethereum Trust (MSSE) and Morgan Stanley Solana Trust (MSOL). They went live on NYSE Arca on July 28, 2026. This is a big deal.
Here's what makes them different from the baseline spot ETF nonsense. MSSE tracks ether performance using the CoinDesk Ether Benchmark 4PM NY Settlement Rate. MSOL does the same for SOL. But the real move is the staking component. Both charge a competitive 0.14% fee, then pass staking rewards directly to shareholders.
The numbers matter here. MSSE plans to stake between 50% to 80% of underlying ETH, capturing a base network reward rate around 1.7%. MSOL goes full send: 100% of SOL staked, targeting approximately 3.4% in network rewards. Morgan Stanley keeps nothing for itself. Approximately 95% of the staking yields hit shareholders as periodic distributions. The remaining 5% covers validator fees. That's the structure.
This is Morgan Stanley's second move into crypto ETFs this year. Their Bitcoin Trust launched earlier, holding more than $381 million in assets under management through July 16, 2026. The firm's entire crypto ETP suite now sits at over $14 billion across 22 products.
Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Eric Balchunas called it plainly: "Morgan Stanley is the biggest ether and sol launch since the initial ETFs." That matters because Morgan Stanley has 16,000 financial advisors managing $7 trillion. Distribution is everything in this space. When a bank with that kind of reach opens the gates, institutions pay attention.
The timing fits a broader pattern. Since spot bitcoin ETFs debuted in the U.S. in January 2024, every major player has rushed into digital assets. Ether products are established now. Solana is the next battleground. There are already eight SOL exchange-traded funds listed with total net assets of $889.3 million, so the competition is real.
Morgan Stanley's pricing and staking structure are designed to cut through that. Earlier this month, the firm expanded spot crypto trading to a wider group of E*TRADE users. They're integrating digital assets into their traditional brokerage platform systematically. This isn't crypto theatre. It's institutional adoption playing out in real time.
The staking yields are the angle that separates these from simple spot products. Retail investors get market exposure plus passive income from the underlying networks. For Morgan Stanley, it's a way to attract serious money in a crowded space.
The question now is whether others follow. When one major bank moves, the rest usually move faster.
