Perpetuals Aren't the Problem—It's How Exchanges Run Them

As perpetual futures trading moves from crypto-native platforms onto regulated U.S. exchanges, the CFTC approved Bitcoin perps from regulated U.S. platforms in 2026, and suddenly everyone's asking the same question: does this import systemic risk into traditional financial markets?

The concern is legitimate. No expiration date. Extreme leverage. 24/7 trading. Put those three together and you get a system where things can unwind very fast and very badly. The crypto industry has seen it. During October 10–11, 2025, multiple major venues activated auto-deleveraging mechanisms to preserve solvency. Then on January 30, 2026, over $2.56 billion in leveraged positions got liquidated in a single trading day.

But here's the thing: critics and regulators are blaming the wrong thing. The October 10–11 liquidation cascade erased roughly 19 billion USD of open interest within 36 hours. Reflexive feedback loops between leverage, liquidity, and volatility. Forced liquidations amplifying price moves. Looks like a perpetuals problem. It's not. It's a venue design problem.

When prices drop sharply, many leveraged positions hit liquidation thresholds at the same time. The exchange must sell all that collateral on the open market at once. That pushes the asset price down further. Which triggers another wave of liquidations. That transmission mechanism—the thing that turns a single account failure into a market-wide event—is pure architecture. Venue design. Nothing to do with the contract structure itself.

A cleared venue operates under fundamentally different risk containment than unregulated offshore platforms. Regulated trading venues face CFTC oversight: capital requirements, surveillance, customer protections. More critically, the Commission has approved perpetual contracts case-by-case, recognising that their unique characteristics—they vary based on the underlying asset—warrant individual review rather than blanket approval or rejection.

There's an institutional angle the debate often misses. Perpetuals offer deep liquidity. Real advantage for hedgers managing large positions. But they're not a one-to-one replacement for dated futures. Perpetual futures don't expire. You hold indefinitely. Funding rate payments keep contract prices aligned with spot. This structure has made perpetuals the dominant vehicle for leveraged exposure in digital asset markets. Kalshi Inc.'s crypto perpetual futures reached $8.5 billion in trading volume within weeks of CFTC approval. That wasn't desperation. That was demand.

Institutions using perpetuals aren't treating them as a replacement for traditional futures. They're using them as a practical hedge vehicle. The liquidity is structural. Retail demand for simplicity and no-roll mechanics has concentrated trading volume in perpetuals, creating the deep, continuous markets that sophisticated traders and risk managers actually need.

So the real question isn't whether perpetuals are inherently dangerous. It's whether a given trading venue has the infrastructure to absorb a default without cascading losses. The CFTC staff issued an advisory setting supervisory expectations for derivatives markets offering continuous 24/7 trading. For designated contract markets, it emphasises robust real-time monitoring, surveillance, and risk controls.

The dividing line between a safe perpetuals market and a systemically dangerous one isn't contract structure. It's the default-management framework. Venues that socialise losses across counterparties through auto-deleveraging transmit shocks. Venues with properly pre-funded clearing funds and segregated customer assets absorb losses at the source. That structural distinction—whether the venue has its house in order—determines everything. Not whether perpetuals exist at all.
