Ripple's Schwartz Pins 2027 as the Year DeFi Stops Being Weird

2026-10-19

David Schwartz, Ripple's CTO Emeritus and the architect behind the XRP Ledger, has been saying the quiet part loud. Not the year after, not "eventually"—2027.

It's an optimistic read, but not without reason. Schwartz points to two shifts actually happening: tokenization is real now, with traditional finance institutions legitimately exploring blockchain-based settlement and asset issuance. Regulatory barriers, meanwhile, are beginning to crack. That combination—institutional appetite plus clearer rules—is reshaping how blockchain finance products could actually reach normal people instead of just crypto obsessives.

The comparison he draws is worth noting. Mobile apps on Android and iOS hit escape velocity partly because the infrastructure was ready and the friction had dropped. He reckons blockchain finance could follow a similar arc once the technical and regulatory hurdles clear. Developers would finally build for ordinary financial customers rather than those already living and breathing crypto.

Ripple isn't content to just talk about it. President Monica Long outlined concrete 2027 targets at an October conference in Seoul: moving customer transaction volume directly onto the XRP Ledger as a major company objective. That means expanding pilot programs using the network's built-in decentralised exchange and connecting Ripple's payments business with emerging lending infrastructure on-chain. It's a shift from off-chain settlement to on-chain activity.

The technical foundation is already being built. The XRP Ledger has implemented amendments designed for institutional compliance. Permissioned Domains—part of the recently activated XLS-80 feature—allow institutions to operate trading and financial services in compliance-first environments by restricting access to verified participants. Permissioned DEX functionality enables regulated marketplaces for currency conversion without the counterparty risks of traditional decentralised exchanges. It's compliance tech, dressed up as infrastructure.

Schwartz also touched on AI's role in all this. Imagine autonomous software agents managing financial decisions and transactions on behalf of ordinary users. It sounds sci-fi, but Ripple has already started building the foundation through its AI Starter Kit, which supports applications using the x402 payment protocol for automated transactions.

The stablecoin layer matters too. That growing liquidity base provides the rails both retail and institutional DeFi applications need to function.

Of course, this is still prediction, not prophecy. Schwartz didn't announce specific products or lock in definitive timelines. The convergence of tokenization adoption, regulatory clarity, institutional infrastructure improvements, and advancing AI technology is suggestive—the pieces seem to be aligning. But whether retail and institutional DeFi activity will actually converge on XRP Ledger at scale depends on execution, regulatory evolution, and broader market conditions that sit well beyond Ripple's control.

2027 is three years away. Plenty of time for the story to change.
