SpaceX's Bitcoin Stash Just Took a Hit—But That's Not the Real Story
2026-08-05SpaceX reported its first quarterly earnings as a public company this week, and the headline numbers are exactly what you'd expect from a space company that just raised $86 billion: revenue of $7.8 billion beat Wall Street's $6.9 billion forecast. The net loss narrowed to $541 million from $1.0 billion a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA nearly tripled to $3.5 billion, up 191% year-over-year. Growth acceleration across launch services, Starlink, and AI infrastructure. All very impressive.
But here's where it gets interesting for us. The earnings disclosure buried something worth paying attention to: SpaceX's digital assets on the balance sheet dropped from $1.637 billion at the end of December to $1.098 billion on June 30. That's a 33% decline in six months. Not because they sold, necessarily. Bitcoin just got battered in the first half of 2026.
Grayscale pegs SpaceX's stack at 18,712 BTC, which makes them the largest diversified public holder of the asset. Pretty serious position. Working backwards from that June carrying value, the implied price per coin sits near $58,700. For a corporate treasurer, holding bitcoin as a treasury reserve isn't exactly shocking anymore—it's mainstream now. But watching it slide by a third in half a year? That stings, even for a company swimming in cash.
The broader point: SpaceX is treating Bitcoin the way other big corporates do. They don't announce every price movement. They maintain discretion. They hold it as a strategic reserve. The fact that it's down means nothing about their conviction—it just means markets move.
What actually spooked investors was something else entirely. Capital expenditures came in at $18.4 billion for the quarter, smashing analysts' $13 billion forecast and nearly double the $10.1 billion from the prior three months. The stock fell as much as 8% in after-hours trading. SpaceX is spending aggressively on AI infrastructure expansion and manufacturing capacity, and the market's suddenly worried about whether all this capex actually turns into near-term profit.
That concern arrives at a tender moment. The IPO only closed two months ago. Then in roughly two months from now, on August 6, about 912 million shares held by employees and early backers will unlock and become eligible for sale. That lockup expiration is a genuinely critical test—will the stock hold its ground when those shareholders can finally bail?
For context: SpaceX ended the quarter with $100 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities. They've got $47.5 billion in backlog. These aren't numbers that scream distress. The balance sheet is built for the long game. The Bitcoin holdings are real but small relative to total liquidity. The spending is aggressive but it's being spent on real stuff—satellites, rockets, compute infrastructure.
This is what a capital-intensive growth company looks like when it finally goes public. Big bets. Real losses. Bitcoin on the books trending downward. And just enough cash and backlog to justify the audacity of it all. Whether that story sells to the public float in August is another question entirely.
