Storj Goes Bankrupt: The Week Crypto's Mid-Tier Players Started Dropping
2026-07-27Storj Labs filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 26, 2026. The decentralized cloud storage company joined what felt like a coordinated exodus this month—BitMEX shutting down after eleven years, BitMart winding down, Movement Labs filing its own Chapter 11. Not coincidence. Pattern.
The thing is, Storj says it'll keep running. Operations continue, customers won't see service interruptions, and the business itself is apparently sound. What killed them wasn't technical failure. It was legacy obligations. Kaloyan Raev, software engineer at Storj, put it plainly: operationally sound, but historically burdened.
Here's the weird part. Storj's restructuring plan includes something almost never seen in bankruptcy court: token holders might actually get equity in the reorganised company. Normally in Chapter 11, equity gets wiped out completely. Creditors get paid first, owners get nothing. This deal would let management, community members, STORJ holders, current investors and new ones share ownership of the restructured entity. Creditors still get priority—that's bankruptcy law—but at least there's a theoretical recovery path instead of a total goose-egg.
That said, it needs court and creditor approval. No guarantees.
The token itself took it in two stages. At filing, STORJ was trading around $0.072. Not much movement at first. Then overnight on July 27 it dropped 14% to $0.06334. Over the longer arc it's been much worse: down 60% from where it stood when Inveniam Capital Partners announced the acquisition back in October 2025. Inveniam has committed to backing the company through restructuring, which at least signals someone thinks there's something here worth saving.
Storj had pulled in roughly $35 million over its lifetime—venture funding, grants, and the 2017 token sale. Not nothing, but in venture terms not a huge pile either.
The broader pattern is more interesting than Storj alone. BitMEX announced on July 23 it would close September 23 after eleven years. BitMart said it would halt trading by August 26 and shut completely by January 2027. Both chose orderly wind-downs over bankruptcy, which is almost gentlemanly by crypto standards. Movement Labs filed Chapter 11 with potential liabilities around $10 million, though the developers said work on the blockchain would continue anyway.
These aren't speculative startups or obvious scams. They're established platforms and protocols. The through-line is straightforward: older crypto businesses running out of runway simultaneously. When investor capital floods into AI instead, when the numbers stop working for mid-tier exchange models, when legacy obligations squeeze out room to manoeuvre—that's when you get a week like this one.
Industry observers call it reallocation. The sector contracting around its core winners. Survivors and casualties sorting themselves out in real time.
For Storj token holders, the restructuring offer is a long shot at recovery instead of certain loss. Whether that's actually worth something depends on a bankruptcy court and a pile of creditors.
