Strategy Puts Bitcoin on Ice: The $3.75 Billion Reckoning

2026-07-29

Michael Saylor's Strategy is in its fifth straight week without buying Bitcoin. That's not a market call. It's a financial pressure valve.

The company just raised $544.5 million in fresh capital by selling shares at a discount. They're sitting on $3.75 billion in cash—enough to cover preferred stock dividend payments for roughly 2.1 years. But here's the thing: they're not shouting about new Bitcoin purchases anymore. Instead, they're quietly buying back their own preferred shares.

Last week, Strategy deployed just $25 million of that capital into repurchasing 288,930 shares of STRC, their high-yielding preferred stock, at an average price of $86.52. That's a meaningful discount to the $100 stated amount. Michael Saylor has promised Strategy will remain a "regular, disciplined buyer" of STRC while it trades below par, with purchases ramping up as the discount widens. This marks the opening move in a $1 billion buyback programme approved in June.

Why should you care? Because Strategy's financial architecture is no longer simple. The company now juggles common stock, convertible debt, preferred securities, and a massive Bitcoin treasury. The preferred stock crisis is real. Annual obligations hit $1.76 billion. When you're servicing that kind of drag, accumulating Bitcoin becomes a luxury, not a mandate.

The numbers are instructive. Strategy's Bitcoin holdings remain frozen at 843,775 BTC—purchased at an average price of $75,476 per coin, representing a $63.69 billion position. At current prices, they're underwater against their own cost basis. The company raised its USD reserves from what they were, and now they're allocating capital to preferred stock defence rather than Bitcoin accumulation.

This isn't a pivot away from Bitcoin. It's a forced recalibration. Strategy is no longer a simple machine that hoards sats. It's become a financial entity managing complex obligations. The pause suggests they're buying breathing room.

Whether this is a tactical reset or a structural shift toward balance-sheet defence will become clearer when Strategy reports earnings on Thursday, July 30. Until then, the silence on new Bitcoin purchases speaks louder than any press release.
