UniCredit Wants to Build the Whole Crypto Plumbing. That's Either Bold or Mad.
2026-09-12UniCredit—Italy's second-largest bank—is not messing about. They're hunting for a technology partner to build out proper crypto infrastructure: custody, trading, tokenized securities, the works. Not a single product launch. Not a dabble. They want the pipes.
The play is strategic. Rather than bolting crypto products onto the side of traditional banking, they're hunting for systems that can handle multiple service lines at once. Custody for holding digital assets. Trading venues. Settlement for tokenized securities. The whole stack. It's infrastructure-first thinking, which stands out in a European banking landscape that's mostly done piecemeal product rolls for the past year.
This isn't UniCredit's first move either. They've been quietly building. In April, they ploughed €4 million into BlockInvest—an Italian blockchain outfit—for roughly 16 percent. Earlier this month they grabbed a minority stake in VC Trade, a German digital debt marketplace. They've already issued Italy's first tokenized minibond on a public blockchain and launched a structured Bitcoin product tied to BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. Now they're just looking for the missing piece: the infrastructure that ties it all together.
Four service buckets are on the table: direct crypto trading and custody; exposure to individual assets; tokenized investment products and fixed-income securities; client access to stablecoins. Which one gets priority first? UniCredit isn't saying. No vendor chosen. Timing fluid. Everything still negotiable.
The EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation has given them room to move. So has Qivalis—a consortium of 37 European banks across 15 countries working on a euro stablecoin. Qivalis started with 10 founding members. Now it's approaching launch in the second half of 2026, pending Dutch central bank approval. UniCredit's technology push is basically the flip side: Qivalis builds the settlement asset; UniCredit builds the demand-side systems so clients can actually use them.
They're not alone in this. Standard Chartered launched spot Bitcoin and Ether trading for institutional clients in the UAE on September 3, building on custody services they rolled out there last year. Israel's Leumi Bank partnered with Galaxy Digital for Bitcoin, Ether and Solana trading—launching early 2027. U.S. Bank pushed through a live cross-border payment using its own USBDC stablecoin. The institutional move into digital assets is accelerating. UniCredit's just being more systematic about it than most.
The real tell will be who they pick as their technology partner. Choose a vendor that only does Bitcoin and Ethereum custody? That's the safe institutional play—professional clients, conventional brokerage model. Pick someone who can handle tokenized securities, complex fixed-income products and stablecoin infrastructure? That signals something wider: a capital markets architecture that can actually integrate blockchain-native instruments into their existing securities business.
Whoever gets chosen will effectively lock in UniCredit's digital asset ambitions for years. Scope, scale, capabilities—all determined by that vendor selection. That's how much weight this decision carries.
